Edmonton, Canada is making its first steps into becoming a more intelligent and efficient city by introducing so called “Smart Parking Metres”.
With the new meter technology, officials will be able to set different rates for different times of the day. So instead of charging $4 an hour for a late fee, you pay for those five minutes. Busier times will be more expensive, with quieter times becoming cheaper.
The proposal has been met with mixed reviews. Some drivers are angry that the new system allows for the highest rates within popular destinations, meaning that some unlucky commuters get charged heavily. It will also hike up the prices for those heading to popular events, such as a football game.
While not technically part of the Smart City Initiative, the smarter parking metres are still worth a mention as they will hopefully encourage people to use public transport rather than their cars.
